Frequently Asked Questions

If your question isn't here, call or text 780.228.3570 — happy to talk it through.

How often does my horse need a farrier visit?

Most horses are on a 6–8 week cycle. Performance horses, horses with hoof problems, or horses in heavy work may need shorter intervals. Pasture horses can sometimes stretch to 8–10 weeks. We'll talk through what's right for your horse on the first visit.

Do you travel? What's the service area?

Grande Prairie and all of Peace Country. That includes the City and County of Grande Prairie, the MD of Greenview, Birch Hills, Saddle Hills, Spirit River, Peace, and Fairview regions. If you're unsure, call or text — odds are I can get there.

Hot or cold shoeing — which one should I book?

Hot shoeing gives a more precise custom fit and is preferred for most horses, especially those with hoof issues, performance work, or anything outside a textbook foot. Cold shoeing is faster and a fine choice for sound horses on a regular cycle. If you're not sure, book the visit and we'll figure it out together.

What do I need to have ready before you arrive?

A clean, level, dry place to work — concrete, rubber mat, or hard-packed ground all work. Good lighting if it's an evening visit. The horse caught, haltered, and ideally already picked out. If your horse is young or hasn't been done before, let me know in advance so I can plan the time.

How do I pay?

E-transfer to Jayce@hotshod.ca is easiest. Cash and cheque also fine. Payment is due at the time of the visit.

Is there a travel fee?

For most of the immediate Grande Prairie area, no. For longer hauls out into Peace Country, there may be a small travel surcharge — I'll always quote it up front when you book, no surprises.

Are you insured / licensed?

Yes. Oklahoma State Horseshoeing School graduate, and carrying liability insurance for the work.

What if my horse is hard to handle?

Tell me up front. I've worked with horses at every stage — green, fussy, never-been-done. The work is safer for everyone when I know what I'm walking into. If your horse needs more handling time, we'll plan for it.
